Syllabus Development

On this page you’ll find the information you need to create a new School of Public Health syllabus or revise an old one.

Syllabus Checklist

This checklist provides Brown University’s and the School of Public Health’s required and recommended syllabus components. Please be sure to read this document carefully.

Syllabus Checklist

Competencies and Domains

Many School of Public Health courses are required to teach and assess specific competencies or domains as part of our ongoing accreditation with the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). To learn which, if any, your course is assigned to teach, click on the button below to download the multi-tabbed Excel spreadsheet. After downloading the spreadsheet, open the left-most (the first) tab and scroll down to find your course. If your course isn’t listed, then your class hasn't been assigned any. If your course is listed multiple times, it has been assigned more than one. In each row in which your course number appears, click on the hyperlink in the cell to the right to go to the exact wording of the domain or competency that needs to appear in your syllabus. If it’s a competency, as opposed to a domain, the hyperlink will also take you to the assessment that needs to appear verbatim in your syllabus for that competency.

If your course has domains, please click on the following button to see how to present these in your syllabus.

Syllabus Shell

You’ll find here a formatted syllabus shell that has the required and recommended elements for a Brown School of Public Health syllabus. You are free to use it, or not, based on your preference. It was created for faculty who find it convenient to have a formatted syllabus outline from which to work.
