Exemplary Program-Level Competencies

Addictions MPH Concentration

Those who earn an MPH at Brown with a concentration in Addictions will be able to do the following:

  1. Explain how the misuse of substances impacts population health.
  2. Compare how different biopsychosocial models explain why individuals develop addiction.
  3. Analyze how social determinants affect vulnerability to addiction using the socioecological model.
  4. Appraise approaches to prevent harms from substance use.
  5. Synthesize evidence for the effectiveness of substance use disorder treatments.
  6. Evaluate the impacts of substance use-related policies on population health.
  7. Produce an addictions science research product that demonstrates mastery of scholarly writing.

Mindfulness MPH Concentration

Those who earn an MPH at Brown with a concentration in Mindfulness will be able to do the following:

  1. Evaluate the evidence for mindfulness’s impact on physical and mental health.
  2. Analyze the strengths and limitations of the major types of mindfulness interventions.
  3. Assess the methods researchers have used to understand the mechanisms of mindfulness.
  4. Utilize a DAG to develop a testable theoretical framework for how mindfulness interventions influence health outcomes.
  5. Create a mindfulness research protocol and data analysis plan.

Maternal and Child Health MPH Concentration

Those who earn an MPH at Brown with a concentration in Maternal and Child Health will be able to do the following:

  1. Evaluate the extent of a maternal and child health problem in a defined population.
  2. Recommend the interventions a defined community should undertake to address a given maternal or child health problem.
  3. Evaluate the effectiveness of policies related to maternal or child health.
  4. Concisely synthesize data from studies on barriers to maternal or child health.
  5. Critique the methods used in maternal or child health epidemiologic research.
  6. Use age-appropriate epidemiologic methods to design a study of maternal or child health.

Health Services Research Ph.D. Program

Those who earn a Ph.D. at Brown in Health Services Research will be able to do the following:

  1. Execute scientifically rigorous analyses of healthcare data.
  2. Interpret the findings of health services research.
  3. Synthesize the state of evidence within a substantive area of health services or health policy research.
  4. Use a health services research theoretical framework to design an original study that addresses a significant gap in the health services or policy research literature.
  5. Produce a publishable health sciences research monograph that demonstrates mastery of scholarly writing.
