Course Offerings and Proposals

Learn about the annual course offering process as well as how to propose new courses or make modifications to existing courses.

Our senior associate dean for education works with department chairs each fall to identify curricular priorities and plan the next academic year’s course offerings. Each chair has their own process for this planning phase in their department. Once the course offerings and instructors are known, they are built in Banner by staff in the Office of Education so that they appear in Courses@Brown.

Propose or Modify Your Course Online

The Online Course Proposal Tool in Banner is the mechanism for adding new courses or modifying existing courses in Banner/CAB.

Online Course Proposal Tool

Instructors of new courses submit a New Course Proposal. Create a new Course Proposal is the navigation to choose in order to create a new course and submit it for review and approval.

Instructors who need to make a change to the information in their CAB course listing submit a Course Modification to accomplish this. Modify an Existing Course is the navigation to choose in order to select a previously approved course for modification and submit it for review and approval.

Instructors can review their pending and archived course proposals on the Course Proposal Dashboard.

See the Online Course Proposal Tutorial for instructions on how to use these tools.

Review Process

School of Public Health course syllabi need to undergo a multistage review process if they meet any of the following criteria:

  1. The course is new

  2. An existing course has a new instructor teaching the course for the first time

  3. The course or syllabus is substantially revised by the instructor

If you are proposing a brand new course, click on the Road Map for New Courses.

Road Map for New Courses

Instructors should use the Guide to Discussions with Chairs and Program Directors re: New Courses and the Proposal Checklist to Guide Discussions re New Courses when engaging with their Chair and with Program Directors whose programs will be associated with the proposed course. These documents will help instructors plan the course according to the curricular parameters identified for the class.

If you are a new instructor of a course previously taught by someone else, click on the Road Map for New Instructors of Existing Courses.

If you have made major changes to a course that you’ve taught before, click on the Road Map for
Substantively Changed Syllabi or Courses
.

Road Map for Substantively Changed Syllabi or Courses

If you are teaching a course that was taught only once before, click on the Road Map for Courses Being Taught for the Second Time.

The reason for this is that new courses (with the exception of those seeking a curricular designation) are
given a “fast-track” approval permitting these courses to be active for one semester only. In order for
the course to be offered a second time, a modified proposal that includes a full syllabus must be
submitted to be reviewed and approved by the CCC/Grad Council.

Road Map for Courses Being Taught for the Second Time

  1. Note that this applies only if you were the original instructor. If you are a new instructor for this course, you will follow the Road Map for New Instructors of Existing Courses and then the Road Map for Courses Being Taught for the Second Time.
  2. Note that If you are making substantial revisions to the course, follow both sections of the Road Map for Substantive Changes to Syllabi or Courses.
